There are few things that create more mind boggling confusion for eCommerce sellers than sales tax. With all its different rules and applications, it can take years to come to a thorough understanding of when and how it is applied. By the time, you do have it all figured out, they will have most likely changed the rules again. In this article, we will explore whether shipping and handling are taxable in Connecticut.

Is Shipping Taxable in Connecticut?

Connecticut’s Department of Revenue tells us this:

Delivery charges taxability Connecticut

Thanks to Connecticut for keeping it simple. You will most likely be paying sales tax on shipping in that state. The rule states that if the items that you are shipping are taxable, the shipping charges are also taxable. If you are shipping non-taxable items like food items, then the shipping is not taxable.

So in conclusion:

You will most likely pay sales tax on shipping in Connecticut.

If you are selling an item that is taxable and you ship it, the shipping (and also handling) is taxable. The only way it ISN’T taxable is if the item you are shipping isn’t taxable.

Other than that, you are going to have to pay sales tax on shipping and handling.
